This is what I did. I have a program called Hexedit.exe and examined the rom image of a .smd file and compared it to the identical rom in .bin format and saw the difference in the header. So I took a .sms file and added the header (all zeros except for the first two and changed them according to your formula). The problem I had is when I cut the header information from a .smd file and pasted it to the .sms file it overwrote the first 512 bytes of the original rom thus destroying the rom. Its most likely the program. It seems it will not allow an addition to the rom and keeps the file size the same and just writes over the first 512 bytes to accomidate the new 512 bytes. Is there another hex editing program that would allow me to make an addition to the original?

Also, the file I downloaded is only 33k in size! It seems that it can not be a correct game rom. I have never heard of such a small file size before. I couldnt find the original SMS file of the game link you provided me so I couldnt verify the correctnesss of the rom file size.
I did try it and it went blank (the sceen) just like if I were to load a .bin file which the DPF doesnt recognize. And from what I remember about the Sega Genesis the Z80 chip in the Genesis model 1 was put in just to make it compatible with the Sega Master System games ( using the power base coverter )so it would depend on the model of the Genesis rather than the backup device given that the backup device recognizes the .smd format. Am I correct in stating this? Perhaps if you know a standard size .sms game that is 512k in size and apply the header to it that may help in narrowing the possibilities down and for once and for all put a rest to this question. And give you a chance to do something else other than answer my long winded questions. Thans again.
