I'm using UltraEdit, it works fine (it's not only a hex editor but also a very mighty util to edit files of all sorts).
> Also, the file I downloaded is only 33k in size! It seems that it can not be a correct game rom. I have never heard of such a small file size before. I couldnt find the original SMS file of the game link you provided me so I couldnt verify the correctnesss of the rom file size.
It's tested and correct, believe me :)
32 KByte ROM file + 512 byte header = 33 KByte (well... at least for Windows Explorer ;) ), the small file size comes from the simple fact that it was one of the first SMS/Mark 3 games released (it even was built in in the very first SMS consoles).
> I did try it and it went blank (the sceen) just like if I were to load a .bin file which the DPF doesnt recognize.
That's why I said you should reset (by pressing the reset switch, not by powering off) your Megadrive after loading from disk. It's the same here.
> And from what I remember about the Sega Genesis the Z80 chip in the Genesis model 1 was put in just to make it compatible with the Sega Master System games ( using the power base coverter )so it would depend on the model of the Genesis rather than the backup device given that the backup device recognizes the .smd format. Am I correct in stating this?
If SMS Carts didn't use special chips to map their ROM area this would be right... but this hardware is required to be "emulated" by the copier, so playing ROMs doesn't necessarily work (a large number of ROMs doesn't work with my copier... like Phantasy Star 1, Ultima 4 or the Sonic series. Fortunately I already own the original Carts ;) ). That's also why I've given you the Hang-On dump first, becaus 32 KByte games don't use Mapper chips (afaik, anyways).
> Perhaps if you know a standard size .sms game that is 512k in size and apply the header to it that may help in narrowing the possibilities down and for once and for all put a rest to this question. And give you a chance to do something else other than answer my long winded questions. Thans again.
Here you go... R-Type (UE) [!].zip. Before you ask: the weird ROM size of 513 KBytes results from the Windows Explorer rounding up the sizevalue ;-)
