Seiken Densetsu 3 problems...

I recently bought a multitap so that my friends and I could play some great SNES-games including Super Bomberman, Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3. With both SoM and Super B-Man working perfectly we were quite disappointed that SD3 would not let a third player join the game.

What I would like to know is, did square drop the 3-player option that made SoM so great for this sequel? If not, could anyone please confirm that it does indeed work.

My guess is that it might once again be PAL/NTSC problems as with FF3 where you could not see the ending.
I have a PAL SNES and a Super Wildcard DX2.
