Tech question: Can X-Band be hacked into a backup device?

As I recall, the X-Band modem had the function of not only connecting to the X-Band network and playing multiplayer online games, but also _renting_ games onto your X-Band unit. Wouldn't that mean that the X-Band has onboard flash or eeprom or some such animal?

I'm curious as to how difficult it would be to hack an X-Band into a backup device/rewritable cart which could be connected to a PC via modem cable. 'Course, the toughest part would probably be working out the interface...
