it's technically no punishment, but a requirement by law for any male over 18 here.
it does suck, is paid badly, and ruins lots of job chances.. so I guess it can qualify as punishment :P

actually, that is just what we have to do here. the main jobs are caring for old people, working in hospitals, etc.
