Wildcard Slow motion/Save state help

I have a SW 3201. I've had it for over 5 years and only used it once, and that was when I bought it. It's been lying in the attic since. I decided to bring it down and into use. Anyway, my question:

I remember being able to use slowmotion and save state facility. But for some reason I don't remember how too. I should state that it was a mario world cartridge that I remember using these facilities on, not a backup rom. I can't find that cart to test now. My main boot cart now is mario allstars, and that's what I am having difficulty using with the slow motion/save state with. What am I doing wrong?
