Just played it myself for about 20 minutes and everythin works fine. First I had a dispute with Tia, then I made it through the Training dungeon, had some battles on the worldmap, got some very bad fish from Tia to eat afterwards and I'm now in a dungeon which leads to a town with a quite strange name... didn't have any problems until now.
Maybe it's really your ROM that is corrupt...
