It's just like a car...you can buy a car, or you can buy all the components needed to make one for 1000% more. Think about it.

i don't know if you have build electonic projects. the example of the car it's not so good. in fact it could be right if i've to build a super tv color or a dvd, but not for a project as a copier.

For example if you look at http://www.smspower.org/smsreader/index.shtml you can find a sms homemade backup unit and it's cost only 9 uk pounds!!
or an old progect i've found for a snes/genesis backup unit called "cartdisk" cost near 30 US $(you can search on the net, but if possible i don't like this project becuse it's quite old and no more supported).
A backup unit (if you don't need other things as vcd plaing etc.. as doctor v64 but only for backup) "could" be not so expansive as you think and it's for this reason that i've ask if there are instructions.
when i've build my dreamcast vga box i've spent 20 $ (now there are vga box at the same price but when i've build the only avaliable was the sega vga box for 100$).
i like the snes but probably i'm not so sure to spend 150$ for a backup unit. It' s only a funny obby.
Probably if a used and good backup unit cost 50 $ and component 30 $ i'll prefer the used unit at 50 $.
