Z64 question

Hello
I have a Z64 that I bought second hand.
It didnt come with a manual and im having
problem saving games.

Sometimes when I turn off the n64 the z64
asks if I want to update the record.
If I press "yes" it will report an
error... my zip drive works fine.
what can be the problem?
