Game Doctor 7: Will any Parralel Port CD-ROM drive work with it or do I have to get the CD-7 drive?

The CD-7 drive (the one made for the game doctor 3/6/7) is nearly impossible to find. I used to have this long ago. Now, I opened it up when I had it and it looked like it housed a regular IDE drive. Can I use a parallel port CD-ROM drive with a Game Doctor 3/6/7 or do I have to use the CD-7? What IDE to Parralel converter does the CD-7 use?
