Yeah, there were about 20 roms done by Anthrox. They were using this 'compatibility mode' of the SNES. They don't have any sound, and the graphics are a bit wafted in places. They are prefixed AS in GOODSNES and in their filenames.
On the subject of 'mappers', I think that they are the way that the processor addresses memory, since you have to mess around with banking in order to access more than 64k on 6502.
I think that the new 'mappers' were introduced to give access to larger and larger address ranges (and to keep the pirates on their toes). The gameboy has a similar thing (MC3, MC5 etc.) which is why certain Roms won't work on a Bung MGD3 cart.
