They use 8 bit parallel going to the DX2 and 4 bits transferring to the PC so it is much faster loading into the DX2 from the PC than backing up from the DX2 to the PC. When I first connected my cable I saw some text file that said cut certain pins in the cable --BZZZZZZT-- WRONG. The pins that the file said to cut were some of the 4 pins for transferring back to the PC so I could never back up my carts. Eventually I figured this out and now I can transfer both ways (with a cable that doesn't have any pins cut).

I've never used the floppy but my guess would be that this is even faster because it doesn't have to go accross the parallel port interface, it's an internal bus.
